Mein 9. November – My personal Nov. 9th

a man holding a sign

Deutsch

The Day the Berlin Wall fell

I always thought, that saying the Wall “fell” sounds a bit like it crumbled and just died of old age, while in truth thousands and thousands risked their careers, their freedom and ultimately their life pushing against it. On Novemer 9th this pushing became quite literally what opened the border at the Bornholmer Straße checkpoint. There are more than enough documentaries about what led to this peaceful revolution, so we’re not going to try to cover that more than casually in this blog – just enough to get a feeling of the growing restlessness that gripped the country in those days. Our strength though – especially on our Berlin Wall bike tours – is the human perspective on 30 years of separation and its end. So we’re going to focus on the smaller, personal stories that nearly everyone has to tell who lived through that day. When you talk to Germans above a certain age, say born before 1980 almost everyone will remember where they were that day and what they thought. Obviously memories become a bit unreliable 30 years after the end of SED-rule in East Germany, but since this video series is about subjective truth anyway, we don’t really care. So today we’d like to start with our first 4 videos about “My personal November 9th 1989 – 30 Years Later”.

All videos have English subtitles you can activate by clicking on the “CC” symol in the lower right corner. If you have a story of your own that you want to share – please send a mail to [email protected]
