Chris Gueffroy: The last victim of the “shooting order”
On February 5th 1989 Chris Gueffroy was shot at the Berlin Wall. He was the last victim of the “shooting order” and the overall penultimate victim that lost his life trying to leave the GDR to find a better life for himself. Chris was a talented gymnast, but didn’t look forward to become a cog in the big machine of competetive sports in East Germany, that made a lot of things possible that normally weren’t – for the price of eternal surveillance and detoriating health (a lot of athletes were doped without consent or knowledge and quite a few of them fight for compensation even today).
Just weeks before, he received his draft call for NVA (Nationale VolksArmee ~ the GDR military force). For Chris and his friend Christian Gaudian this was the last brick in their decision to leave. Just months away from open borders the both of them tried to cross the Britz connection canal in the southern half of Berlin. According to rumours the order to shoot was suspended, while its existence has never been acknowledged by officialdom – tragically these rumours were wrong.
They triggered the alarm on an electrical fence almost immediately after entering “no-man’s land” (which is of course part of the GDR and no no-man’s land at all). Instantly there were dogs barking, flood lights piercing the cold winter night, border guards yelled and they started to run. Just meters from the last barriers they were spotted by border guards that opened fire right away. Chris Gueffroy dies right there, while his friend lay beside him, gravely wounded, their only company the dogs and the guards.
The four soldiers who did the deed received a premium of 150 Marks (about a month’s rent for a decent appartment at the time and more accurately described as a bounty) and an official recommendation. Chris’ friend Gaudian’s freedom is bought by the west during the summer. Later, one of the soldiers got two years parole for manslaughter, while the other three went free – Just following orders, the most German of all excuses.

Am 5. Februar 1989, wurde der 20-jährige Chris Gueffroy an der Berliner Mauer erschossen. Er war der letzte, der dem Schießbefehl an der Berliner Mauer zum Opfer gefallen ist und der Vorletzte überhaupt, der bei einem Fluchtversuch ums Leben gekommen ist. Chris Gueffroy war ein begabter Turner, wollte jedoch keine Karriere als Sportler unter den strengen Bedingungen in der DDR machen.
Anfang 1989 erfuhr Chris, dass er zum Wehrdienst bei der NVA eingezogen werden sollte. Diese Aussicht war es, die ihn und seinen Freund Christian Gaudian den Entschluss fassen ließ über die Berliner Mauer in den Westen zu fliehen. Nur wenige Monate vor dem Mauerfall – in der Nacht zum 6. Februar – wollten die Beiden am Britzer Verbindungskanal die Berliner Mauer überwinden. Gerüchten zufolge war der Schießbefehl außer Kraft gesetzt worden.
Das Überklettern der “Hinterlandmauer“ gelang zunächst, aber einer der Beiden löste Alarm an dem überall installierten Grenzsignalzaun aus. Scheinwerfer, Hunde, Gerenne und Gerufe folgen. Kurz vor dem rettenden Westen schließlich wurden sie entdeckt und die Grenztruppen eröffnen das Feuer. Gaudian wird schwer verletzt, Gueffroy stirbt noch vor Ort. Der Schießbefehl wird ein gutes halbes Jahr vor dem Mauerfall am 3. April 1989 tatsächlich aufgehoben.
Vorher erhielten die vier beteiligten Grenzsoldaten jedoch noch die übliche Prämie von 150 Mark (Ost). Gaudian wird mitten in der Wende vom Westen frei gekauft, wie 10.000e Gefangene vor Ihm. In den Mauerschützen-Prozessen nach der Wiedervereinigung wird lediglich einer der beteiligten Soldaten zu einer zweijährigen Bewährungsstrafe verurteilt, während die anderen drei frei gesprochen wurden.
In der Kapelle der Versöhnung an der Mauergedenkstätte finden regelmäßig von Dienstag bis Freitag von 12:00 bis 12:15 Gedenkandachten für die Maueropfer statt. Während der Winterzeit Pausieren diese.
