Let Berlin be next
“But the passion for freedom cannot be denied forever. The world has waited long enough. The time is right. Let Europe be whole and free.”
After a NATO summit two days earlier during which the alliance agreed on a new “comprehensive defense control strategy” US president George Bush visits Germany and holds a well-received speech in Mainz. Like speeches by American presidents tend to be, it was quite pathos-laden.
But some situations need some pathos, and this was one of them. Even though, this was not substantial change compared to former US doctrine the clarity with which he formulated this was a moral boost to opposition forces in the GDR and strengthened belief in the West, that change might be possible.
“Just as the barriers are coming down in Hungary, so must they fall throughout all of Eastern Europe. Let Berlin be next — let Berlin be next! Nowhere is the division between East and West seen more clearly than in Berlin. And there this brutal wall cuts neighbor from neighbor, brother from brother. And that wall stands as a monument to the failure of communism. It must come down.”
Europa “einig und frei”
Auf Staatsbesuch in Mainz hält Bush eine viel beachtete Rede, bei der vor allem ein Part Aufmerksamkeit erzeugt. Bezugnehmend auf den begonnenen Abbau des Grenzzaunes zwischen Österreich und Ungarn deklamiert er “Let Berlin be next”. Die Mauer sei nur noch ein Symbol des Scheiterns des internationalen Kommunismus und gehört abgerissen. Einige Formulierungen dieser Rede haben sich bis heute im politischen Sprachgebrauch gehalten. Bush forderte bspw. Europa müsse “einig und frei” sein und bot der Bundesrepublik eine Partnerschaft “in leadership” an.
